This concise masterpiece began as a commission by French TV for the news series Envoyé Spécial. Using his unique sense of artistic digression, Chahine transforms this portrait of a city into a self-portrait of a filmmaker. With students from the Institute of Cinema, Chahine guides the viewer through the many faces of his beloved Cairo, revealing the escalating tensions among contemporary Egyptians about problems of unemployment, Islamism, in- migration and ambivalence towards the West. Shot in early 1991, this film culminates with student demonstrations against the Gulf War. Provocative; avant-garde. Dir: Youssef Chahine for Misr International Films, Cairo and the Centre National de la Cinematography. Arabic and French with English sub-titles. |
