Freely adapted from the novel by Andre Gide, this Egyptian/Algerian co-production is another of Chahine’s moving parables set between the Arab-Israeli Wars. After being imprisoned for political activism for more than a decade, Ali is finally returning home to his family. His family, in turn, looks to Ali to stand up against his ruthless brother's tyranny. But when Ali and his family are reunited, they find that prison has so thoroughly crushed Ali's youth and idealism that he now allies himself with the oppressor. |
